Sexual Welfare and the Student Body in Post-War England
My research historicises the role of 鈥榮tudent welfare鈥 through the lens of sexuality and the sexual health crisis currently facing British higher education and its student body. Occurrences of date rape, sexual violence, unwanted pregnancies, and increasing transmission rates of sexually transmitted infections continue to cause problems on campuses across the UK and globally. My research aims to historicise this crisis by exploring the historical relationship between sex, health, and young people in Britain in the decades after the Second World War.
I seek to understand how students and institutions of higher education understood, navigated and experienced sexual and reproductive health in late twentieth-century England. These include access to contraception, understandings of sexually transmitted infections, and the problem of sexual harassment on campus.
I am supervised by , Dr Claudia Stein and Professor Mathew Thomson.
