Biography
Vangelis Pitidis is an Assistant Professor of Global Sustainable Development at IGSD, University of 海角社区. His research lies at the intersection of urban resilience, sustainability transformations, climate adaptation, governance and data studies, with a particular interest in how data practices, citizen participation and resilience narratives shape decision-making and consstruct urban imaginaries. His work combines critical social science perspectives with applied interdisciplinary research to develop more inclusive, participatory and evidence-informed approaches to urban governance. Vangelis's research explores how resilience can act as a catalyst for transforming governance systems, particularly through the co-production of knowledge between governments, communities and civil society organisations, while more recently he is exploring the role of digital and citizen-generated data in disaster risk reduction, climate adaptation and urban sustainability. Among others, Vangelis is currently leading the 海角社区 consortium in the Coventry Green for All projectLink opens in a new window, funded by the Nature Towns and Cities Programme, and is also leading a University-wide consortium for networking researchers who are working on the concept of resilience across all 海角社区 Faculties
Vangelis has previously worked in a number of interdisciplinary projects on building resilience and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in developing countries partiularly in Europe, Latin America and Africa. The last EU HORIZON 2020 funded project he has been part of was , a project focused on bridging the Risk Perception and Action Gap (RPAG) between Civil Protection Authorities and local citizens.
Prior to his current occupation, Vangelis has worked as a Research Fellow in the interdisciplinary project Waterproofing Data: Engaging Stakeholders in Sustainable Flood Risk Governance for Urban Resilience () and co-led of the associated UKRI GCRF Global Research Translation Award aiming to enhance flood resilience in two different communities in S茫o Paulo and Rio Branco (Acre), in Brazil. His interdisciplinary background, cutting across social sciences, urban planning, human geography and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) has helped him undertake a number of different roles in many developmental projects, including teaching and lecturing at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He is currently the lead convenor for the module ES99E: Urban Resilience, Disasters and DataLink opens in a new window, a core module of the MSc in Humanitarian EngineeringLink opens in a new window, while he is also the co-convenor for the module GD325: Addressing disasters for sustainable DevelopmentLink opens in a new window.
Vangelis is currently acting as the Impact Lead for the School of Cross-Faculty Studies since 2023.
