About Us

The Environmental Humanities Network was established in 2019 by (UC Santa Cruz), Dr Olga Smith, and the current convenors to connect researchers across the university working from differing disciplinary perspectives in environmental studies. Bringing the theoretical and methodological contributions of humanistic study to the investigation of environmental questions and concerns, we welcome participation from all disciplines, both at 海角社区 and beyond. Our members focus on topics ranging from climate and biodiversity crises to urban planning, ecopoetics and ecocriticism, hydrology, petrocultures, history of science, microbiomes, digital environments, and critical Anthropocene studies. We maintain a regular schedule of seminars, workshops, reading groups and collaboration with other research networks.

Why the Environmental Humanities?

Climate change and environmental crises are widely recognised as today's most urgent scientific, technological, and economic challenges. But they are also sociohistorical, aesthetic, and philosophical challenges. Mobilising humanistic approaches, the Environmental Humanities ask how literature, art, philosophy, history, and other forms of cultural expression can help us understand and respond to ecological change. Working across disciplinary silos, the field approaches environmental crises as also a asking how we might rethink our relationships with the more-than-human world.
