Scientific Background

Research Interests

Chemoimmunotherapy has transformed outcomes for patients with high grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL); however, 20-30% of patients either fail to respond to or relapse early following CD20 targeted treatment requiring further treatment lines and often resulting in poorer clinical outcomes. Each year approximately 5000 people per year will be diagnosed in the UK with high grade NHL. My research interests are focused on understanding the mechanisms underlying inherent resistance to CD20 therapies and other small molecule inhibitors using advanced laboratory techniques.

Research Groups

I am the the clinical lead for the CRUK/NIHR Leicester ECMC and Director of the Hope Cancer Trials Centre. I am part of the NIHR Leicester Biomedical Research Centre Personalised Cancer Prevention and Treatment Theme and have collaborations with the Lifestyle and Respiratory and Infection Themes. I have ongoing collaborations with the School of Chemistry and Institute for Structural and Chemical Biology.

Provision of Training

From the beginning of your PhD, we will map out your training needs and help you to achieve these. Whilst I will not directly supervise your training on a day to day basis, you will be supervised by experienced post doctoral researchers and other PhD students and I will ensure that if your training needs are outside of our research group that I will assist in this organisation.

Progression Monitoring and Management

I will set out expectations of your progression initially weekly through supervisory meetings and subsequently as you become more independent I would anticipate these progress meetings to be less frequent for example monthly. I like to be kept up to date of progress and although expect you to drive your project, operate an open door policy to enable you to come to me or arrange adhoc meetings as needed.

Communication

As I manage both a clinical practice and translational lab, my emails may be sent out of hours. However, I do not expect you to respond to these outside of your working hours. We have a WhatsApp group through which we communicate both on a work level and to arrange team building/ social events.

Meetings

PhD Students can expect scheduled meetings with me at least once per week. These meetings will be a mixture of face-to-face and via video chat or telephone. I am usually contactable for an instant response 3 or 4 days per week.

Work Patterns

Certain tasks in my lab need to occur at set times, and students need to be able to commit to a rota/timetable shared with other members of the team. Core hours tend to be 9-5, however students are expected to manage their own work load and hours, which may be outside of these hours.

Notice Period for Feedback

I need at least 2 weeks鈥� notice to provide feedback on written work of up to 5000 words.
