Scientific Background

Research Interests

My research focuses on how specialised chromatin domains are established, regulated, and inherited, and how these processes contribute to genome stability. A major focus of the lab is the centromere, a specialised chromosome region that is essential for accurate chromosome segregation and provides a powerful model for understanding how chromatin identity is specified and maintained across cell divisions.

We investigate the molecular and epigenetic mechanisms that establish centromere identity, organise centromeric chromatin, and ensure its faithful inheritance. More broadly, this work addresses fundamental questions about how chromosome structure and epigenetic information are maintained from one generation of cells to the next.

To tackle these questions, we combine genetics, functional genomics, long-read DNA sequencing, epigenomics, and live-cell imaging. This allows us to study centromeres from multiple perspectives, from the DNA and chromatin factors that define their identity to their dynamic behaviour during cell division.

Provision of Training

Training will initially be led by me at the bench, with additional support from experienced postdoctoral researchers and technicians in the group. Specialist equipment training will be provided through the University鈥檚 Research Technology Platforms (RTPs). As students progress, I encourage them to take increasing ownership of their development by seeking relevant training and collaborative learning opportunities across the department and wider University.

Progression Monitoring and Management

Lab members are expected to take ownership of their projects and act as the main driving force behind them. As we are a small lab, we discuss your projects regularly 鈥� through informal weekly conversations and a more formal lab meeting, where members present on a rotational basis. You should keep me updated on new results, challenges, and plans. Based on your progress, I will provide advice and guidance to help steer your project toward the best outcomes. I will also outline my expectations for your development on a monthly basis.

Communication

I am always available to be contacted by email, additionally we use 鈥楽lack鈥� for communicating within the group and use this as a platform to share files, documents and updates.

Meetings

PhD Students can expect scheduled meetings with me at least once per week. These meetings will be face-to-face. I am usually contactable for an instant response on every working day.

Work Patterns

The timing of work in my lab is completely flexible, and (other than attending pre-arranged meetings) I expect students to manage their own time.

I need at least 2 weeks鈥� notice to provide feedback on written work of up to 5000 words.
