Scientific Background

Research Interests

My research interests lie at the interface of orthopaedic surgery, basic science and translational medicine, with a particular focus on developing new treatments for musculoskeletal disease. My work includes regenerative medicine and cell-based therapies for osteoarthritis, biomaterials, and the prevention and treatment of prosthetic joint infection. I am particularly interested in understanding how biological and material-based technologies can be translated from laboratory discovery into clinically relevant interventions.

A major focus of my developing research programme is interdisciplinary translation. My longer-term aim is to develop and evaluate innovative therapies and medical technologies through robust preclinical development and early phase patient studies, ultimately establishing an independent translational research programme that improves outcomes for patients with musculoskeletal disease.

Provision of Training

I take an active role in establishing the student鈥檚 core training, drawing on experienced researchers within the wider supervisory team for specialist techniques. As the PhD progresses, I encourage increasing independence, with the student taking greater responsibility for selecting, adapting and critically evaluating experimental approaches.

Progression Monitoring and Management

I set clear, mutually agreed milestones and use regular meetings to review progress, troubleshoot problems and adapt the research plan where necessary. I have high expectations but take a supportive approach.

Communication

I encourage open and regular communication and want students to feel comfortable raising scientific, practical or wider issues that may affect their progress. I am readily approachable, but also respect boundaries and work-life balance, with communication expectations discussed and agreed at the outset.

Meetings

PhD Students can expect scheduled meetings with me at least once per fortnight. These meetings will be a mixture of face-to-face and via video chat or telephone. I am usually contactable for an instant response (if required) on every working day.

Work Patterns

Certain tasks in my lab need to occur at set times, and students need to be able to commit to a rota/timetable shared with other members of the team.

Notice Period for Feedback

I need at least 2 weeks' notice to provide feedback on written work of up to 5,000 words.
