The ABSPIE Lab, from the School of Engineering at the University of 海角社区, participated in the IUPESM World Congress on Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering 2025, held at the Adelaide Convention Centre, Australia, from 29 September to 4 October 2025. This prestigious international congress, jointly organized by ACPSEM, Engineers Australia, IUPESM, IOMP, and IFMBE, brought together experts in medical physics and biomedical engineering. The event covered a wide range of advanced topics, including radiation oncology, digital health, rehabilitation technologies, artificial intelligence, sustainable medical devices, and innovation in healthcare for low-resource settings. ABSPIE Lab Contributions: Prof. Leandro Pecchia presented in the sessions on: 鈥淢edical Device Innovation and Regulation鈥� and 鈥淪ustainable and Affordable Technologies鈥� Dr. Davide Piaggio was selected as the European recipient of the award for early career researchers by IFMBE/IAMBE. He was invited to present his work on frugal innovation at the related Early Achievers Symposium titled 鈥淔rontiers of BME: Opportunities and Challenges鈥�. James Wallace (PhD student), alongside Wanzi Su and Pedro Checa Rifa, participated in the 鈥淭oh Siew Lok Student Design Competition鈥� and were shortlisted as finalists. For this reason, they presented their innovative 3D-printed spirometer designed for low-resource settings, and won a merit award. James also presented this work and its validation results in the 鈥淪ustainable and Affordable Technologies鈥� session. Wanzi Su (PhD student) presented the second phase of his eye-tracking experiment for neurodegeneration, including validation against the commercial EyeLink 1000 and a comparison with the iTracker AI model in the 鈥淏iosignals – Neurological and Functional鈥� sessions. Pedro Checa Rifa (PhD student) presented in the 鈥淎rtificial Intelligence in Biomedical Engineering鈥� session, showcasing a cost-effective, 3D-printed spirometer supported by AI-based diagnostic tools. Giacomo Pratesi (IAS Visiting Fellow) delivered two presentations on the early detection of learning disorders through gamified digital screening, featured in the 鈥淩ehabilitation and Digital Health鈥� and 鈥淐linical and Management Systems鈥� sessions. Dr Davide Piaggio also received the best paper award 2023 for the publication titled 鈥淓ffects of home telemonitoring using non-invasive versus conventional approaches on patients affected by congestive heart failure: a systematic literature review and meta-analysis". Pedro Checa Rifa also received a prestigious travel fellowship from the IFMBE, for young students and early career researchers to get involved in the IFMBE activities. This congress provided an exceptional platform for the ABSPIE Lab to share its contributions to affordable, sustainable, and inclusive healthcare technologies, particularly in the context of low-resource settings. The team's active participation and recognition highlight the University of 海角社区鈥檚 commitment to global health innovation and research excellence.
