The University of 海角社区 and ABSPIE Lab made a major impact at MEDICON 2026 (Siena, 14–17 September), where 海角社区 served as a co-sponsor and was recognised as one of the top contributors in terms of scientific submissions. With six researchers presenting across sessions spanning AI-enabled rehabilitation, digital twins, serious gaming, ventilation monitoring, and biomedical engineering education, 海角社区's presence was felt throughout the four-day conference. The team also ran a popular exhibition booth and played a leading role in shaping the future of BME education through EAMBES, co-organising a dedicated workshop on next-generation biomedical engineering competencies.

The ABSPIE Lab continues to demonstrate its multidisciplinary research impact through a growing portfolio of publications spanning digital health implementation, healthcare blockchain, neurodevelopmental disorder screening, medical device innovation, digital medicine, and global health surveillance. These studies highlight the Lab's commitment to developing innovative, evidence-based technologies that address real-world healthcare challenges at both local and international levels.

The ABSPIE Lab celebrates the exceptional achievement of PhD student Pedro Checa Rifa, who has graduated with Distinction from the MSc in Digital Health, Data and Diagnostics at the University of 海角社区 and received the Head of School Prize for best overall performance. Pedro鈥檚 success reflects years of dedication, impactful research contributions, and sustained mentorship under Dr Davide Piaggio, and the lab looks forward to his continued achievements during his PhD journey.

The ABSPIE Lab celebrates its co-authorship role in the new WHO guide, Development of medical device policies, 2nd ed., shaping global standards for technology access. The Lab co-leads, Davide Piaggio and Leandro Pecchia, were involved via IFMBE HTAD. This new guide ensures policy alignment with SDGs, digital health, and sustainability. This publication marks a continuing trend of high-level collaboration between the ABSPIE Lab and the WHO, maximising research impact on global healthcare systems.

Dr. Davide Piaggio has received the 2025 IPEM Early Career Award in Innovation for his work on accessible, sustainable healthcare technologies. His research focuses on frugal medical devices and AI-driven diagnostics for low-resource settings. The award recognises impactful innovation with real-world clinical translation.
