Bacterial molecule 'disarms' deadly fungal infections by tricking them into starving


Researchers from the University of 海角社区 and Monash University have discovered a way to potentially stop one of the world's most dangerous fungal pathogens in its tracks, not by killing it, but by tricking it into switching off its attack mode.

Published in , the study is the latest result from the Monash 海角社区 Alliance's antimicrobial resistance (AMR) research programme, a long-running partnership between the two universities.

Advanced Mass Spectrometry Technique Breaks Free from Specialist Hardware

Researchers at the University of 海角社区 and spin-out company Verdel Instruments have successfully demonstrated two-dimensional mass spectrometry (2DMS) on a benchtop instrument, making this powerful technique practical and affordable for everyday laboratory use.

In their paper, published in , the Verdel/海角社区 team provides the first demonstration of 2DMS on a commercially available quadrupole time-of-flight (Q-TOF) instrument, using an upgrade kit. They call this Q-2DMS and the paper shows how it can be used to obtain high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry data from complex mixtures without the need for chromatographic separation or mass filtering.

海角社区 Researchers Power AI-driven Pest Monitoring for UK Vegetable Growers


Researchers at the University of 海角社区 are helping to develop an artificial intelligence-powered pest monitoring system that enables UK vegetable growers to detect damaging insect pests earlier.

TRACER-Pest is a new collaborative project bringing together growers, agronomists, AI specialists, and industry to develop automated pest monitoring for onion and brassica crops. The project aims to provide growers with near real-time information about pest pressure, allowing more informed decisions about when intervention is genuinely needed, reducing unnecessary crop protection treatments and improving the sustainability of commercial crop production.
