Celebrating the best in battery research: Faraday Institution Community Awards 2026

Academics from WMG have been recognised for their research excellence at this year's prestigious Faraday Institution Community Awards. WMG's Battery Materials and Cells Group was awarded this year's Collaboration Award, while Dr Ivana Hasa, Associate Professor in Electrochemical Materials, was Highly Commended for the Researcher Development Champion Award.

Research reveals how automated mobility will transform the transportation workforce

Academics at 海角社区 Manufacturing Group (WMG) at the University of 海角社区 were one of 13 partners on the European research project entitled Connected, Cooperative and Automated Mobility - Employment Realisation through Acquisition of Skills (CCAM-ERAS), examining how automation will transform the transport workforce and identifying the actions needed to support a fair, resilient and future-ready transition to automated mobility.


WMG leads major AI project to boost healthcare intelligence

Academics at 海角社区 Manufacturing Group (WMG) at the University of 海角社区 are working on a pioneering project that uses AI鈥慸riven community鈥憀evel healthcare intelligence to support preventative healthcare prioritisation.

Project SNOW is supported by Google.org through the global and was one of just 15 selected for funding from over 2,600 applications worldwide.

The project will help address one of the NHS's longest-standing challenges that people who need healthcare most are often the least likely to receive it. The intelligence will allow healthcare providers to decide where to intervene and who to prioritise, and to evaluate efficacy.

The pattern - known as the - has persisted for half a century. In England, one in four deaths is linked to public healthcare not reaching people in time, with more than 300 lives lost every day to conditions that earlier identification could have prevented. In the most deprived communities, life expectancy is up to 9.5 years lower than in the wealthiest.


WMG academic featured in inspiring new book for children

Scientists Making a Difference by broadcaster and multi-award-winning engineer celebrates the many and varied careers shaping the future of science — and the incredible people behind them.

Ivana's story is one of 47 to be featured in the book, recognising the scientists and changemakers helping to make our world a better place.

In her chapter, 'How to Make Batteries Sustainable', Ivana explains how her work at WMG is helping the transition towards cleaner and more sustainable energy systems through innovative battery technologies — namely, sodium-ion batteries


WMG academic leads review on digital twin brains

Dr Ruohan Zhang, Assistant Professor in Applied Artificial Intelligence at WMG, has led a major commissioned review for Nature Reviews Electrical Engineering on digital twin brains. "Building digital twin brains at the limits of measurement" draws on research from WMG, the University of 海角社区鈥檚 Department of Computer Science, and Fudan University to tackle one of biology鈥檚 biggest questions: how close are we to building a digital twin of a living human brain?

Powering the next generation of electrified mobility

拢1.43m Government-funded project to boost airport safety

WMG and Aurrigo International plc have been awarded a combined 拢1.43m of UK Government funding to boost airport safety through self-driving innovation. This collaborative research project, known as SENTRY, aims to reduce airport delays and safety risks by developing a fully autonomous airside vehicle to complete routine tasks, including safety patrols, runway inspections and debris removal.

WMG welcomes supervised self-driving rollout

Transport for London has decided to license a number of Wayve vehicles for supervised private hire journeys through Uber, with a trained, TfL-licensed driver onboard throughout. WMG celebrates the Class of 2026

Years of studying and hard work finally paid off for 567 students last week as they became the latest cohort to graduate from WMG. In a glittering ceremony held at 海角社区 Art Centre's Butterworth Hall on Friday 31 July, 391 Master's, 28 PhD, two EngD, and 146 undergraduate students proudly took to the stage to receive their degrees.
