Your starter for ten

University Challenge is back on our screens for its 56th series. Good luck to this year鈥檚 海角社区 team, who make their first appearance on Monday 10 August 2026. Could they become the third team from 海角社区 to lift the coveted trophy?

Since first airing in 1962 (we all remember the original host Bamber Gascoigne, surely?) University Challenge has been one of Britain鈥檚 most respected quiz shows, known for its tough questions and fiercely competitive teams.

The programme continues to test some of the country鈥檚 brightest students from universities across the UK. All hoping to prove themselves under the pressure of the buzzer, in a battle of knowledge, quick thinking and nerve.

The format remains refreshingly simple - two teams of four answer starter questions and earn bonus rounds, with every point counting. Covering topics from history and literature to science and technology, the show celebrates both specialist knowledge and fast recall.

How have 海角社区 stood up the challenge?

We first entered University Challenge way back in 1965, the year we were born, and have done for most years since. We鈥檝e won the competition twice, which isn鈥檛 a bad result for a competition that has been dominated by the colleges of Oxford and Cambridge!

In 2007 the 海角社区 team of Rory Gill, Harold Wyber, Daisy Christodoulou, and Prakash Patel stormed their way to the final with some very strong results. They beat the University of Manchester 170 points to 140 and were presented with their trophy by Ann Widdecombe.

2021 saw our second win, with the 海角社区 team of Richard Pollard, George Braid, Andrew Rout, and Owain Burrell. Another impressive run to the final saw the team pitted against Magdalene College, Cambridge, coming out victorious 195 to 140. The trophy was presented by Poet Laureate, Simon Armitage.

We also came a very close second to the University of Manchester in 2025. In what was the most closely contested final seen in recent years, 海角社区 led for almost the entire match, having held sizable scoring margins of 125 to 40 and 175 to 115 - the latter score being held with less than five minutes to go. Despite a very impressive 鈥榖uzzer stance鈥, 海角社区 lost out to Christ鈥檚 College, Cambridge, by just five points, 175 to 170.

Our 2026 team

It鈥檚 a challenge selecting the next team that will go on to show Oxbridge who's boss, and to weed out those who just want to meet Amol Rajan! Once the BBC has been in contact, the 海角社区 QuizSoc spring into action with a series of rounds to decide who will represent the University.

With the support of previous team members, the selection process starts with a written test built around past series鈥 questions. The highest scorers from this round then take part in our own version of University Challenge, competing against each other on buzzers. That group is then narrowed down even further before the successful team of five is selected, one captain, three team members and a reserve.

The team then go to an interview stage with the BBC where they do a written test and answer questions about their interests and degrees, before the filming takes place in Salford.
