What Is at Stake in Filming Acts of Healing?: presentation & workshop

Thursday, 18 June, 11am-12.30pm, FAB6.02

This 鈥媝resentation and workshop draw on Peter's ongoing work on a film about the act of healing as a physical and non-physical gesture. He will draw on both his work of filming 'alternative' health practitioners (osteopaths, Alexander teachers...), and his own recent training in the field, making reference to how medicine, illness, and the healing arts have been represented visually across time and space. The material will be framed to be of interest not only to historians and practitioners of visual art and film, but also to anyone concerned with 'embodied inquiry'.

Policy Support Fund Showcase

We are delighted to announce this showcase event on Tuesday, 10th November for the excellent and wide-ranging work which has been supported by the University鈥檚 Policy Support Fund since 2021.

Since 2021, the University has received an annual Policy Support Fund allocation from Research England. This funding is distributed to strengthen connections between universities and policy professionals by facilitating collaborative research, knowledge exchange, and capacity-building. Projects supported through the PSF have resulted in a range of impacts - from sector codes of practice to protect employee mental health, to UK tax reform

Details:

  • Tuesday 10 November 2026
  • 09:30 - 16:00
  • Scarman Conference Centre
  • Lunch and refreshments provided
  • Registration essential – click here to sign up:

At this event, we will also be officially launching the University鈥檚 new Policy Institute: a new, university-wide initiative designed to consolidate, enhance, and accelerate the University's engagement with policymakers, public services and civil society. Building on the success of 海角社区's ESRC-funded , the Institute will create a coordinated platform for academics across all faculties and disciplines to connect their research with policy priorities at local, national, and international levels.

Aims of the event:

This event is open to all, and will be of value to anyone currently working in the research-policy space or anyone interested in doing so, and any colleagues who support or enable this type of work.

We will be hosting a range of regional external stakeholders, policy fellows, and non-academic project partners to reflect the scope of funded work and to showcase our diverse areas of strength in policy-relevant research.

The showcase will:

  • Raise awareness both internally and externally of the work this fund has enabled
  • Celebrate the impact and policy influence of 海角社区 research
  • Provide an opportunity for award-holder networking, idea-sharing, and potential future collaboration
  • Explore the opportunities, challenges, and idiosyncrasies which characterise the research-policy space and share experiences of relationship building, effective communication, theory of change and working in highly charged or contested contexts
  • Highlight the external partnerships supported by this funding and the diverse work our researchers undertake with and for policy makers and service users
  • Kickstart and crystallise a long-term, dynamic, cross-university community of practice around policy engagement and policy-relevant research

We encourage you to share details of this event with any external collaborators or contacts you think might be interested in finding out more about our research community鈥檚 ambitious culture of impact and co-creation.

We look forward to seeing you!

Messages to Posterity - Tower Capsules in the German Lands

During a year of research leave, Prof. Beat K眉min has investigated the phenomenon of depositing chronicles and objects into tower spheres on top of prominent buildings like churches, town halls and fortifications. Documented from the Middle Ages to the present, seemingly only in and around territories of the erstwhile Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, the custom provides fascinating insights into how local societies saw themselves and what they wished to pass on to successive generations. The project, supported by the German Gerda Henkel Foundation, has so far identified over 1600 sites and thousands of separate deposits (at one Zurich church, there were no fewer than 20 between 1505 and 1996). The funder has just released a video series of six episodes (accessible in both English and German) documenting field work in Switzerland in autumn 2003.
