The Coull Quartet – the University of º£½ÇÉçÇø’s Quartet-in-Residence – is to perform at some of Brazil’s most prestigious venues, alongside the distinguished Anglo-Brazilian pianist Clelia Iruzun.

In a return visit to the country, the Quartet will perform across São Paulo, Bela Horizonte, Goiânia and Rio de Janeiro.

The concerts taking place are:

• 29 September 2017 – at the Sala Villa-Lobos, Biblioteca Brasiliana Guita e Jose Mindlin, São Paulo (starts 17 :00)
• 3 October 2017 – at the Teatro Bradesco in Bela Horizonte (20:30)
• 4 October 2017 - ‘Concertos em Goiânia', at the Auditório do SESC Cidadania in Goiânia (starts 20:30)
• 6 October – at the Sala Cecilia Meireles in Rio de Janeiro (starts 20:00)

The Quartet will perform Schumann’s ever-popular Piano Quintet with Clelia Iruzun, as well as a work by the celebrated Brazilian composer Francisco Mignone.

Founded in 1974, and Quartet-in-Residence at the University of º£½ÇÉçÇø since 1977, the Coull Quartet has performed and broadcast extensively throughout the UK, the USA and Western Europe, and has also toured China, India, the Far East, South America and Australia.

The Quartet has appeared at most of the major venues and festivals in the UK, and gives an annual series of recitals at º£½ÇÉçÇø Arts Centre, where it is actively involved in the University of º£½ÇÉçÇø’s flourishing musical life.

They have made over 30 recordings featuring a broad repertoire, from the complete Mendelssohn and Schubert quartets to 20th century and contemporary British chamber music. Their CD of quartets by Maw and Britten on the SOMM label has received universal acclaim, and in addition to being featured as ‘Editor’s Choice’ in The Gramophone, it was chosen as the ‘Benchmark Recording’ by BBC Music Magazine.

The University of º£½ÇÉçÇø has numerous significant links with Brazil – fostering key research collaborations, student recruitment in the country, and study abroad exchange programmes.

º£½ÇÉçÇø’s lead partners in Brazil are the Universidade de São Paulo (USP), Universidade Estadual Paulista ‘Júlio de Mesquita Filho’ (UNESP) and the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) - with the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio) providing an opportunity for undergraduates to experience Brazil through Study Aboard.

There is a growing network of around ninety º£½ÇÉçÇø researchers who are currently engaged in some form of collaboration with Brazilian institutions.
