Choosing an alternative to QMP
QMP is being retired and will no longer be available for assessments. All existing and new assessments must move to a supported alternative.
This page will help you choose the most appropriate replacement based on your assessment type, level of risk, and marking needs. There is no direct one鈥憈o鈥憃ne replacement for QMP. The right option depends on what you need your assessment to do.

How to choose

- Do you need automated marking?
- Is secure online delivery required?
- How complex is the marking and moderation process?
Use the guide below to narrow your choice.
Option 1: Paper-based assessment
Paper-based assessment remains appropriate for some in鈥憄erson exams and disciplines where handwritten responses are essential.
Good fit if you need:
- Handwritten workings, calculations, or diagrams
- In鈥憄erson exam hall conditions
- Minimal reliance on digital systems
- A familiar, low鈥憈echnology approach
- Offline marking workflows
Typical use cases
- Closed鈥慴ook exams
- Essay or short鈥慳nswer questions requiring handwriting
- Assessments where digital access is not guaranteed
鉁�Choose paper if your assessment depends on handwriting, in鈥憄erson delivery or to limit issues around use of generative AI.
Option 2: Moodle Quiz
Moodle Quiz is well-suited to objective, auto鈥憁arked assessments, and scales effectively to large cohorts.
Good fit if you need:
- Multiple鈥慶hoice, numeric, matching, or short鈥慳nswer questions
- Automated marking and grading
- Immediate or scheduled feedback
- Randomised questions or answers
- Integration with the Moodle gradebook
- Efficient delivery to large groups of students
- Secure online exams using the opensource Safe Exam Browser.
Typical use cases
- Formative quizzes
- Low鈥憇takes or mid鈥憁odule tests
- Practice and revision activities
- Knowledge鈥慶heck assessments
鈿狅笍 Whilst Moodle Quiz may be less suitable for long essay questions or high鈥憇takes exams requiring enhanced security controls, it can still be used for these.

Option 3: Wiseflow
Wiseflow is designed for high鈥憇takes assessment and supports secure online exams, coursework submission, and structured marking workflows.
Good fit if you need:
- Secure online exams using the Respondus safe-exam browser.
- Essay or long鈥慺orm digital answers
- A mix of question types in one assessment
- Anonymous marking
- Moderation and second marking
- External examiner access
- Coursework submission and feedback in the same system
Typical use cases
- Online exams (open or closed book)
- High鈥憇takes summative assessment
- Essay鈥慴ased or mixed鈥慺ormat exams
- Coursework requiring structured marking and feedback
