Just as the views of previous students helped shape your student experience, the views you give now help to shape the experience of future students. We asked departments for actions and changes they have made in direct response to feedback received in previous PTES surveys.

Student Experience

Feedback from our PGT students led to a significant project Link opens in a new windowenhancing your experience, particularly for our international PGT students.

International Careers

You told us that the hiring season is often finished by the time you start your course, and you want to know more about the job market and application timeline. We created a specific International Student Careers webpage, incorporating a timeline for career planning from three months before arrival.

Visa Support

You wanted more tailored support towards the end of your course, especially for international students navigating visa transitions. We reviewed the service scope Link opens in a new windowof our Student Visa Advice Service and expanded so that we can now better support your transition between visas, by creating leaflets and downloadable letters to employers, explaining how temporary post-study work routes can contribute to your longer-term career goals.

The Library

You said

You asked for more quiet study spaces.

We did

We created a sensory study room on the 2nd-floor extension of the Main Library, designed for a calm and focused environment. This refurbished space features new furniture, including height-adjustable desks and all-in-one desktops. We鈥檝e added comfortable seating options and ergonomic pods to support individual learning. We also created the 鈥楤reathing space鈥� relaxation room, a space for quiet reflection and a break from study.

You said

You asked for improved accessible space.

We did

We鈥檝e enhanced accessible spaces across all five floors of the library. We refurbished and repainted these areas to create a more welcoming atmosphere, introduced new height-adjustable desks, and upgraded IT equipment for improved access. Additionally, we installed sensory equipment, such as sensory lamps, to enhance comfort. A new accessible room and a bookable online meeting room will be coming soon to the 2nd-floor extension!

You said

You asked for more assistive technology.

We did

We upgraded the assistive technology area on the first floor with new assistive software. We also introduced a new assistive technology space on the 2nd-floor extension, featuring height-adjustable desks and specialised software in a quiet setting to support diverse needs.

The Nook

The Nook was created in response to student feedback around having dwell spaces on campus. This is an essential space to decompress and escape the pressures of university life:

Pause: Take time out, make a cuppa, swap a book, have a chat, or enjoy a quiet moment.

Meet: Join friendly gatherings like the Community Lounge and Global Caf茅, where you can share experiences, get creative, and make new friends.
Discover: Explore what鈥檚 happening across the University and make the most of your 海角社区 experience.

Students created mood boards of how they wanted the space to look and feel, which shaped the design and facilities offered in the space. Following its opening in Term 1 of 2025-26, the space is now regularly used by students and hosts weekly Together at 海角社区 events. Hear from students:

"Having a space on campus not centered on academics or spending money is really nice - it offers a chill 3rd place."

Personal Tutoring

Personal tutoring plays a key role in supporting your academic success at 海角社区. To make sure it continues to meet students鈥� needs, the University carried out a Personal Tutoring Review during the 2024/25 academic year.

The review was shaped by extensive consultation with students and staff across the University, including surveys, forums, Students鈥� Union engagement, and departmental discussions. Student feedback played a central role in identifying what works well and where clearer expectations were needed.

Personal Tutoring Review

Unitu

Unitu is a collaboration between the University and the Students' Union, and has been rolled out to a number of departments in 2025-26. It is an online platform that aims to help universities to improve the student experience by effectively engaging with the student voice in real time.

Students can post issues, questions, ideas, or praise; posts can be to the private board, for just students to see and Course Reps to raise on their behalf at SSLC meetings. Posts can also be added to the public board, for staff to address directly and quickly. Some issues can be resolved without waiting for the next SSLC meeting.

Using Unitu, feedback around teaching and learning is escalated efficiently to academic staff, providing transparent and actionable results. So far in the 2025/26 academic year, Unitu has hosted:

Wellbeing

The University鈥檚 student wellbeing strategy group utilise student feedback, where it has been particularly helpful in understanding how we can continue to improve accessibility and support students needing reasonable adjustments.

This feedback has been instrumental in the planning of the Student Wellbeing Strategy for 2030

Departmental actions:

Computer Science

Computer Science have:

included key guests to the coffee catch ups, including researchers, careers and module organiser colleagues.
built upon the active activities schedule running more badminton sessions and a 5-a-side football session.
run socials and workshops in partnership with PGT SSLC, including Halloween, Christmas and board games themes.
offered additional careers sessions
restructured the MSc programme, using feedback from PTES.

Economics

Economics have responded to feedback in numerous areas, including:

Moved teaching and exams to in-person.
Extra support and feedback classes to optional modules.
A review of our curriculum to improve our degree programmes, address student needs, and adapt to the evolving educational and professional environment.
A Module Skills page to help you understand how each module taken equips you with important skills as you progress through your degree.
More shared events for both MSc and MRes students. We introduced additional events such as a scones breakfast and board game sessions.
Worked with the Students' Union on improved bus services.
Introduced Wellbeing and Progression officers to provide all postgraduate students with a dedicated contact for their wellbeing needs, in addition to their academic personal tutor and our Senior Tutor.

MSc: Feedback and impact MRes: Feedback and impact

History Maths Psychology SMLC

SMLC have worked closely with the student reps to strengthen and further promote their extracurricular activities to enhance their teaching and learning community.
In response to comments from students relating to the curriculum, SMLC updated their curriculum, integrating industry and technology-related modules, as well as increasing the opportunities for translation skill development.

WBS

WBS responded to PTES comments that students felt they had little involvement in decision making by introducing Student Community Voice Groups.
WBS students commented on the lack of academic writing support and the department responded by introducing more tailored sessions on academic writing, specifically for Master鈥檚 students.
Comments relating to the availability of extracurricular activities in WBS led to trips being scheduled on Saturdays.
Concerns around the high workload and impact on mental health led to WBS introducing more wellbeing events for students, including a session on resilience, a visit from therapy dogs and a visit from Alpacas to help reduce assessment and exam stress.

PTES 2026 Results

2,795 Postgraduate Taught students at 海角社区 responded to the PTES 2026 survey. The University achieved a response rate of 54.6% a notable increase from 46.7% in 2025.

海角社区's overall satisfaction score has increased to 85% compared to 83% from last year's performance.

Teaching, Community, Assessment, and Skills Development all saw improvements. Engagement, Organisation, and Support remained stable, while Online Resources decreased slightly by 1%, although it remains the highest-scoring area. Overall, the results indicate improved student satisfaction and experience across most themes.

2,535 Postgraduate Taught students at 海角社区 responded to the PTES 2025 survey. The University achieved a response rate of 46.7%, a notable increase from 44.4% in 2024.

This strong engagement reflects the commitment of our students to shaping their learning environment.

海角社区's overall satisfaction score remains steady at 83%, unchanged from last year鈥檚 performance 83%.

In the latest rankings, 海角社区 demonstrated strong performance in the areas of Assessment, Teaching and Organisation. Engagement and Support also rose from last year, whilst Skills Development declined slightly, suggesting this is an area for improvement in developing students' academic and professional capabilities.

PTES 2024 Results

2,594 Postgraduate Taught students at 海角社区 responded to the 2024 PTES. The University achieved a 44.4% overall response rate, nearly 7% higher than last year鈥檚 37.7% response rate. Overall satisfaction in almost all survey areas remained stable, fluctuating generally +/- 1%. The only survey areas to drop more than 1% were Assessment and Feedback, declining from 78% in 2023 down to 76% in 2024, and Resources, which declined from 91% in 2023 to 89% in 2024.

In the latest rankings, 海角社区 demonstrated strong performance among Russell Group institutions, securing a top quarter position in areas of Engagement, Community, Support, and Skills Development.

At an institutional level, Community continues to be the lowest scoring section in 2024, with a 1% decrease in students agreeing they feel part of the community compared to 2023 (72% vs 73%), especially for our Part-Time students. This suggests ongoing positive work, such as within the SU, Welcome Weeks for PGTs, support from DSEPs, engagement with PGT tutors and directors, and more. While the Community score has improved since 2022 (67%), this is still an area for improvement.

PTES 2023 Results

2625 Postgraduate Taught students at 海角社区 responded to the 2023 Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES 2023) which gave an overall response rate of 37.7%. This was almost 8% higher than in 2022.

The Good

84% of postgraduate students who responded were satisfied with the quality of their course. 92% of students who responded said they would recommend the University of 海角社区. Students felt part of a community (74% agreed, vs 67% in 2022) and that they had sufficient opportunities to interact with other PGTs (70% agreed) and they felt like they belonged at 海角社区 (74% agreed). Whilst there is still work to be done in this area, these results place 海角社区 in the top quarter of Russell Group Universities and show that initiatives put in place as a result of previous feedback, such as welcome weeks for PGTs are having a positive effect.

Areas for Improvement

Workload management was an area highlighted by students as being less positive. 69% of students agreed that the workload was manageable.

PTES 2022 Results

2286 Postgraduate Taught students at 海角社区 responded to the 2022 Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES 2022). The overall satisfaction for PTES 2022 was 84.1%, the table below shows positive results generally across the various sections of the survey, Departments have now recieved headline data alongside open comments and a fuller analysis will follow late in the Autumn to support departments with initial reflections and ahead of the next cohort delivery.

The provider specific question response is not as high as we would have liked it, but it reflects what we already largely know that much more work is needed to improve PGT student experience. Students were asked to rate the statement: 鈥業 feel part of a postgraduate student University community鈥�. A number of projects are in-train to improve experiences, many allied to the work in response to the NSS 2021 results where conclusions focused on the importance of rebuilding and strengthening the student-staff community.
