º£½ÇÉçÇø Law School is proud to announce that Professor Courtney Abel (LLB Law, 1977) was recently honoured by the Society of Caribbean Lawyers (SOCAL) with its inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award. He was also selected by the Organisation of Commonwealth Caribbean Bar Associations, to receive the 2026 OCCBA Award for Distinguished Service to the Legal Profession and the Judiciary.

Every year, several awards and prizes are granted to a selection of our graduating students to recognise and celebrate the success of our top performers! We are proud to announce this year's winners.

Current student Noor Syed (LLB 3 year) has received the ‘Honorary Private Law Submission Prize’ for his article on the challenges posed by artificial intelligence and algorithmic contracting to the common law of contract.

We are delighted to announce that one of our future graduates has been awarded The University’s Outstanding Student Contribution Award (OSCA) for 2026. Tani Ilemobola, who studies on our Law & Sociology degree, has been received this recognition for her exceptional commitment to widening participation and community-building and the lasting and transformative impact she has had on the º£½ÇÉçÇø community.

Dr Alex Powell, Associate Professor in Law, has been awarded the Bernard Crick Prize for the best article in Political Quarterly for his co-authored research that explores the growing influence of victim-led campaigns on UK lawmaking.

In recognition of their contributions, Professor Jackie Hodgson and Dr Charlotte Woodhead have been awarded a º£½ÇÉçÇø Award for Public and Community Engagement (WAPCE).

Tani Ilemobola has been selected as Highly Commended for a º£½ÇÉçÇø Award for Public and Community Engagement in the Student Social Mobility Champion category. The award is acknowledgement of her outstanding efforts, hard work and dedication and celebrates her contributions.

Three º£½ÇÉçÇø Law School alumni have been recognised for their outstanding contributions in the recent King’s Birthday Honours List.

Professor Vanessa Munro (principal investigator), Dr Siobhan Weare (co-investigator, Lancaster University), and Dr Madeleine Millar (research and innovation associate), have been awarded £719,909 in funding from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). The funding is for their project, ‘Delivering Justice in a Digital Age: Exploring the Impact on Mock jurors of Pre-Recorded Evidence in Sexual Offences Trials’, which will begin in September 2026.

Sergeant Jonathan Benjamin of West Midlands Police has been awarded a º£½ÇÉçÇø Policy Hub Fellowship. He has been working with Professor Jackie Hodgson (Law), Dr Rachel Lewis (Sociology) and Dr Ruth Bernatek (Law) on their research and impact work using innovative arts-led approaches to challenge racist attitudes and behaviours within the police. As an in-residence Policy Fellow, Jonathan will be able to further this engagement, including with the Centre for Operational Police Research, COPR.

Law 3 Year LLB student Thea Baloch was named joint winner at the 5th Annual National Law Student Triathlon held in Kent last month. The event brought together many talented future legal professionals from Universities across the UK.

Congratulations to final-year undergraduate mooters Ewan Lazenby (LLB 3 year) and Hannah Smith (Law with German) on winning the ELSA 2026 Commercial Moot Court Competition.
