• Involve students as much as possible: Ask them to do jobs/tasks so that you both benefit.
• Start with a brief chat about what they want to learn from you.
• Set clear learning objectives before you start teaching and review these at the end.
• Teach 鈥淥perational learning鈥� and 鈥渟ocial integration鈥� - knowing where you are and how the system works, which are important skills.
• Include allied skills such as note reading & writing, learning abbreviations & structures of notes.

• Be a role model
• Think aloud 鈥� explain your thought process
• Show students how to:
  • Make a list of problems in the presentation and explore each problem independently supported by results
  • Encourage students to challenge themselves 鈥� difficult case/ management

1. Send your student to the next patient to summarise the notes.

2. They have the time it takes you to see your patient.

3. You move on to meet your student at their patient and they present the case to you.

4. Assess their clinical reasoning - ask 鈥渨hy?鈥�

5. Clarify their differential diagnosis and management plan.

6. Give specific feedback to help them improve

• Send the student to re-clerk a patient and then compare their notes with the patient notes
• If students ask for teaching on a big topic (for example, ECGs) choose one thing to focus on, for example a specific patient's ECG (you can start from the basics and work up to the pathology)
• Quiz ward round: Ask one question for each patient. If the answer is complex or there are lot of students give them a longer question to research while you carry on with the round. Some suggestions:

1. 1. 1. List of drug indications
      2. Pharmacology for each medication on a drug chart
      3. Care bundles
      4. Fluid prescriptions
      5. Scoring systems & guidelines

• End by asking for two things they have learnt and
• One thing they will go away and read up about - can ask them to present next time.
